How do I find a good dentist?

Here are some tips on finding a good dentist

1. ADA Member – Look for an ADA (Australian Dental Association) member. ADA Members agree to abide by a code of ethics and participate in ongoing education.

2. Personal Recommendation – Ask your friends, neighbours, co-workers, family doctor or previous dentist for their recommendation.

3. Location – Will your dentist be located near your home or work? Will the surgery be convenient for you? Ask about the availability of after hours emergency services.

4. Communication – Consider the friendliness and helpfulness of the dentist and his/her staff. Are they willing to answer your questions and readily provide information?

5. Clear – Is the practice clean, tidy and hygienic? If you have questions on infection control are they answered? Are instruments sterilised? Do staff wear gloves and masks, and offer you protective eyewear?

6. Respect – Does the dentist appreciate that your time is important, allowing, of course, for the unpredictability of some procedures, eg. Emergencies?

7. Medical History – Does your dentist take interest in your medical and dental history and listen to your concerns about having dental treatment?

8. Examination – Does the dentist examine all your teeth and your gums thoroughly and regularly?

9. Options and Estimates – Does the dentist present you with treatment options and explain them so that you understand? Does the dentist give you pre-treatment cost estimates and inform you of variations as they occur?

10. Shared Planning – Does the dentist have a long term view of your dental health – with a plan that you arrived at together, including seeing you regularly to help maintain optimal health?

We like to think at Cornerstone Dental we have the best dentist in Brisbane. You’re welcome to come meet our team so you can decide!

How often should I change my toothbrush?

Most dentists agree you should change your toothbrush every 3 months. Studies show that after three months of normal wear and tear, toothbrushes are much less effective at removing plaque from teeth and gums compared to new ones. The bristles break down and lose their effectiveness in getting to all those tricky corners around your teeth. It is also important to change toothbrushes after you’ve had the flu, mouth infection or a sore throat. That’s because germs can hide in toothbrush bristles and lead to reinfection. Even if you haven’t been sick, fungus and bacteria can develop in the bristles of your toothbrush – another reason to change your toothbrush regularly.

My toothbrush looks like a shaggy dog within a week. Should I get a new one with harder bristles?

To prevent unnecessary wear to your tooth enamel, all dentists recommend a soft bristled brush. Even a medium toothbrush is too hard. And if your toothbrush looks shaggy in a week, you need to see your dentist to discuss the correct and more efficient brushing technique. Even in 3 months of brushing, your toothbrush should not look shaggy if you are brushing correctly. If you scrub back and forth, which a lot of people incorrectly do, you will flatten the bristles one way and then the other, an miss all the crevices between teeth. The correct technique involves circular motion and brushing right into the gums. Feel free to bring your toothbrush along to your next check up for your dentist to inspect.

When should my child first see a dentist?

It’s time for your baby to see the dentist for the first time when their first tooth becomes visible or when they reach 12 months of age – whichever comes first.

While you might think it’s not necessary to book an appointment until your baby has a full set of teeth, which usually takes place by the age of 3, the earlier your child visits the dentist the better.

Is there a warranty on dental treatment?

Unfortunately, no dental restoration will last forever, whether it be a filling, a composite build-up, an implant or a crown. However, some restorations are likely to last longer than others and we will always give you treatment options where they exist, to enable you to select the type of treatment that best suits your needs. Also, at the time you are given your dental treatment plan, we will give you an approximate expectation of how long your treatment may last. Then, once your treatment is finished, we believe that the ongoing care and maintenance of your new teeth is a shared responsibility. We would ask that you clean your teeth regularly and well, maintain an appropriate diet, and ensure that you return to see us each year for an examination and any continuing care that may be required. In return, we will guarantee that your treatment will last as long as it possibly can before it is due for replacement. Thus, if a restoration fails in the first few years of service, it is possible that there may have been a fabrication fault or flaw, and in a shared care arrangement as described above, we would undertake to replace a faulty restoration for you at little or no out-of-pocket cost.
